Gemini Health Care Group’s 5th Annual Fundraiser Gala – March 9th in Virginia

New York (TADIAS) – Gemini Health Care Group announced that it will hold its 5th Annual Fundraiser Gala on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 7 PM to 12 AM at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. The U.S.-based organization, which focuses on providing pediatric services and training in Ethiopia, was founded by Ethiopian American physician Dr. Ebba K. Ebba, formerly an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta and currently in private practice in Jacksonville, Alabama.

In a statement Dr. Ebba said this year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Irwin Redlener, founder and president of the Children’s Health Fund (CHF), which provides health care to homeless children in New York while supporting a national network of pediatric mobile clinics and fixed site facilities in rural and urban communities targeting medically underserved children.

“In addition, each year we honor individuals who have made significant contribution to medicine or to the community in general,” Dr. Ebba said. “This year, we will be honoring a couple of pioneering Ethiopian physicians, Dr. Taye Mekuria and Dr. Bekele Afessa, who dedicated their lives and career to the advancement of medicine. Mr. Melakou Guirbo, a determined organizer working to inspire and mentor young Ethiopians in the Washington, D.C. area, will also be honored for his community service.”

The evening program includes dinner, music, live and silent auctions featuring a variety of prizes ranging from artworks donated by local artists to round-trip airline tickets to Ethiopia.

Gemini Health Care Group to Hold Annual Fundraiser Gala – September 24

New York (TADIAS) – The Annual Fundraising Gala benefitting the Gemini Health Care Group, a U.S.-based non-profit organization that focuses on providing medical services to children and pediatrics assistance to medical professionals in Ethiopia, is scheduled to take place in Arlington, Virginia, on Saturday, September 24, 2011.

The theme for this year’s event is “Bridging the Health Care Gap through Partnerships,” and the keynote speaker is Dr. Aziza Shad, the Amey Distinguished Professor of Neuro-Oncology and Childhood Cancer as well as Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Georgetown University School of Medicine. The entertainnemnt segment of the evening features singer Hiruth Girma, accompanied by Alemayhu Makonnen and his band.

“We are also delighted to honor outstanding individuals who have made tremendous contributions in the areas of education, research, public health and community service nationally and internationally,” the statment said.

The honorees include Dr. Aklilu Lemma (posthumously), who was the former Dean of the Faculty of Science and Director of the Institute of Pathobiology at Addis Ababa University. His pioneering research produced a cheap and locally available intervention that helped combat a parasitic disease called Schistosomiasis or Bilharzia. Other awardees include Dr. Ahmed Moen, Dr. Tsehaye Teferra and Ms. Mary Cohen.

The press release notes: “In March 2011, we took a medical mission trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia consisting of medical and surgical teams. Sub-specialists in pediatric ENT, urology, ophthalmology, audiology, neurology, pulmonology, endocrinology, dermatology and emergency medicine performed services at three local hospitals as well as at Mekanisa School for the Deaf. The medical team also conducted a two day Continuing Medical Education (CME) attended by nearly 120 pediatricians and pediatric residents and medical staff. While we take a moment to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments, as well as thank our supporters, our medical mission to Ethiopia continues.”

GHCG Announces 4th Medical Mission to Ethiopia

New York (Tadias) – Gemini Health Care Group (GHCG), a U.S.-based Ethiopian American NGO that focuses on pediatric training and assistance to medical professionals in Ethiopia, launched its 4th annual educational and medical mission in March 2011.

“Beginning on March 18th, the GHCC Board members as well as eighteen health care professionals will be in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to provide teaching and service,” says Dr. Ebba K. Ebba, the group’s Founder and President. “The pediatric sub-specialists in the areas of pediatric ENT, Ophthalmology, Audiology, Anesthesia, and Urology will be providing training and medical assistance at Black Lion Hospital, Cure Hospital and Mekanissa School for the Deaf. This portion of the medical mission is being organized in collaboration with Healing the Children, Greater Philadelphia Chapter.”

During the team’s last trip to Addis they treated young people including 8-year-old Zemen Toshome, whose story was highlighted by Opinion Columnist Harold Jackson in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jackson wrote: “For more than six years, Zemen has lived at Tikur Anbesa (Black Lion) Hospital in Addis Ababa. He goes outside only briefly on the hospital grounds. He can’t shout because of his medical condition. Zemen has laryngeal papillomatosis, a disease in which tumors grow inside the larynx, vocal cords, or respiratory tract. The disease occurs when the human papillomavirus (HPV) is transferred from a mother to her child at birth. The tumors can grow quickly and cause difficulty in breathing, which if not corrected can lead to death.”

“The second part of our medical mission includes a one‐week educational mission to pediatric residents and medical students at the Black Lion Hospital as well as to other community pediatricians,” Dr. Ebba says. “We have recruited four pediatric specialists in the areas of pediatric Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Neurology and Emergency medicine to be participants at the First Annual Pediatrics by the Nile.”

The latter is a medical education conference to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference, which is being co‐sponsored by the Ethiopian Pediatric Society, is scheduled to take place on Thursday March 31, 2011 and Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Addis Ababa Hilton.

New York (Tadias) – The 3rd Annual Fundraising Gala for Gemini Health Care Group, a U.S. based NGO that focuses on providing pediatric medical services and professional training in Ethiopia, is scheduled to take place in Arlington, Virginia, on Saturday, September 25, 2010.

According to Zeithuna K. Ebba, GHCG’s Public Relations Officer, the upcoming event will feature inspirational speakers and plenty of entertainment. “We are honored to have Dr. Mehret Mandefro deliver the Keynote address,” Zeithuna told Tadias Magazine. “We are also very excited to announce that legendary singer Mahmoud Ahmed will grace the entertainment part of the evening.”

The PR Officer said the 2010 fundraiser will include live and silent auctions of paintings and other donated items. “The live auction will highlight works by a diverse group of international artists, including the New York-based Japanese portrait painter Kumiko Buller, who donated her favorite painting of young Obama,” Zeituna said. “Other participating artists include Dilip Sheth, Solomon Asfaw and Debebe Tesfaye.” The live auction will be hosted by the Maryland based multimedia marketing and promotional network, Tebabu and Associates.

According to the evening’s program, the gala will also honor neurologist Dr. Enawgaw Mehari, Founder and President of People to People (P2P).
