New York (Tadias) – Haile Gerima’s award-winning film Teza is set to make its U.S. premiere at the Avalon Theater in Washington D.C. on Thursday, September 17, 2009.

Teza has scooped several awards at prestigious international film festivals – including the Venice Film Festival, the Carthage Film Festival, and the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco). The film focuses on the tumultuous years of the Mengistu era told through the gripping story of a German-educated, idealistic Ethiopian doctor.

Teza’s U.S. premiere is sponsored by the European Commission, Positive Productions, and WPFW-FM. Tickets can be purchased at Sankofa.com.

Watch the Trailer:
“Set in Ethiopia and Germany, Teza examines the displacement of African intellectuals, both at home and abroad, through the story of a young, idealistic Ethiopian doctor – Anberber. The film chronicles Anberber’s internal struggle to stay true, both to himself and to his homeland, but above all, Teza explores the possession of memory – a right humanity mandates that each of us have – the right to own our pasts.” (tezathemovie.com)

  1. Greetings!

The US Premiere is next Thursday, September 17, 2009. The Premiere tickets cost $30 which include admission to the movie on Thursday and to the Wrap Party at LIV on Friday, Sept 18,2009. The Wrap Party will feature live Ethiopian music, Hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to celebrate and dialogue with Haile Gerima and cast of Teza.

This event is co-sponsored by WPFW and the European Commission.

I encourage you to buy tickets for the premiere to show Mr.Gerima our appreciation for his continued commitment to making movies that are reflective of our society. As an independent filmmaker, Mr.Gerima faces countless battles to bring his films to life and to the silver screen. It is important for us to show our support, so that he may continue his good work.

For many Ethiopians and Ethiopian-Americans, this movie will stir many emotions and thoughts regarding our existence away from our motherland. For others, it can lend clarity and insight into the complex history of Ethiopia.

Tickets and additional details are available at http://www.tezathemovie.com.
